Gone are gentle waves and sleek spirals this Autumn – don’t be afraid to pump up the volume and add some ‘oomph’ to your curls!
For inspiration, take a look at Marc by Marc Jacobs A/W 13 shows, where models such as Cara Delevingne and Daphne Groeneveld took to the runway sporting blow-dried curly hair with added ‘va va voom’. So, how can you achieve this look at home without the help of a top stylist?
Firstly, with the help of a diffuser. A diffuser is a clever attachment to fit to the end of your hairdryer which distributes the air and the heat from a regular hairdryer more evenly, resulting in less frizz and more body for your curls. Keep your hairdryer on a medium heat and let the diffuser do all the hard work; if you have naturally curly hair and need to minimise frizz, then start at the roots, working the attachment down your hair, or if you have naturally straight hair that needs more volume for this look, try flipping your hair upside down apply the heat to the roots. The result? More voluminous body to your hair and bigger, better curls!
There are also a number of products available in shops, salons or online that will enhance and create curls for this particular look. If you want to achieve maximum volume before styling, then a styling mousse is ideal for you, applied to wet hair before drying or diffusing. There are plenty of hair mousses available designed to work with curls; from Tigi’s Bed Head range comes their Foxy Curls ‘Extreme Curl Mousse’ which provides a gentle hold while creating soft, shapely curls. Elsewhere, Curl Friends ‘Shapely Curls Mousse’ from Umberto Giannini is a favourite among reviewers; this mousse provides a bit more hold while adding a glossy finish.
To complete your voluminous look, a finishing spray is vital. Big hair can require a lot of maintenance throughout the day, so a medium hold hairspray is essential to maintain the body and volume of this style. If you are looking for a humidity-resistant, frizz-defying wonder spray, Moroccanoil’s Luminous Hairspray will shield your hair while providing a weightless hold and adding a unique sheen. Another light alternative would be L’Oreal Elnett Satin Diamond Hold which will hold your curls in place, leaving it soft to the touch.
